A super beaver moon will light up Australian skies on Wednesday night, with a stunning celestial shower to follow this month as the Earth passes through a meteor stream in space.
The nickname comes from this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere, when beavers would prepare for winter and trappers once sought their thick pelts for warmth. It follows October’s Harvest Moon, the first supermoon of the year, which took its name from old farming calendars.

Astronomer captures 2 meteors slamming into the moon (video)
Two bright meteors were caught slamming into the moon on Thursday (Oct. 30) and Saturday (Nov. 1), by Japanese astronomer Daichi Fujii, curator of the Hiratsuka City Museum. The flashes, visible from Earth for just a split second, were caused by space rocks striking the lunar surface at high speed, producing brief but brilliant explosions of light.
